Happy 4th of July Weekend! With the heat and wonderful breeze the fields were able to dry off enough to finish planting the "Cold Crops" that had to be trans planted form the green house this weekend. We are now all officially sporting our "farmer tans".
Deliveries have almost all of the problems worked out, Bob and Rodger are doing a great job as usual, please remember to drop of your box when you pickup your produce each week.

Someone can turn the rain off now, wow! we wondered when we were going to get May's weather but we did not need the April showers in June!!!! We had a long wet weekend of planting the first plantings of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels' sprouts. A week of sun and wind is really needed here at the farm.
Those of you picking up at a location please remember to drop off your box from last week when you pickup this week. We are also taking egg cartons and quart & pint baskets.

We will be having that day: Dish to pass Pot Luck Picnic with farm roasted corn & farm bake bread, lots of lawn games, crafts, music, fun and lots of laughs. This year we will be delivering your produce boxed. This will be a great change
but we do need your help to make this work. We will need the box brought back to
the pickup location the next week when you pickup your produce in order to
deliver your next order boxed. The host family may have limited space so please
find out where they will be having you put the box when it comes back. You will
need to untuck the flaps and flatten the box to save space for the host family.
Please make sure the inside of the box is wiped out and dry before you flatten
the box. Please do not store your veggies in the box. When you get the veggies
home please unpack them from the box and store in appropriate location,
refrigerator, counter, etc. The veggies will not stay fresh in the boxes. Call
the farm if you have any questions.

The "garden" is growing nicely. The transplants and 1st, 2nd and 3rd seed plantings are doing great. We will be starting harvest this next week. 6/15/10 will be opening day at the farm and deliveries will start 6/16/10!!!!!! We will be sending 2nd email out to all members and host families 6/11 or 6/12 to confirm location of pickup or home delivery day. If you do not receive an email by 6/13, check your spam & junk mail first, then please contact the farm to verify that we have your correct email. We will be posting under "Produce Selection" the first harvest on 6/14/10.
We will be delivering the produce boxed this season. We are trying out this new method of delivery to see if the produce will stay fresher longer. Further details will be coming out in the 2nd email.
Enjoy your week!

Well we have been planting and it seems as if the warm Spring weather is sticking around!!
Tom, Jake, Brian & the girls planted close to 6000 tomato and pepper plants this weekend. We have been able to plant the 2nd planting of beans, 1st planting of zucchini and summer squash and other odds and ends. We have peas, beets, herbs and the 1st plantings of beans up and growing. We transplanted celery last Sunday (we are trying this for the first time) well the nasty bugs love it, where are my lady bugs when I need them!!!! by the end of this week we should have the 1st planting of everything in and the 2nd & 3rd plants going.
Now is when we take a deep breathe and smile at each other and confirm our LOVE for the garden. Tom has his "farmer tan working", the girls are already arguing about who is going to drive the tractor and who is going to transplant and Luc has found a joy in moving the rocks in the garden from one pile to another. Yes we train them early to pick rocks from the field, now I just need to keep him from eating them! He fusses when I take them away so they must taste good.
This coming week will be the busiest planting week of the season. My farther-in-law Ray, with Mike & Jake are helping out this week in preparing the last sections of the fields to be planted and the "Big Transplant" from the green house. Please send us your prayers and positive thoughts this way.

2010 Windy Meadow Farms CSA Member,
Welcome!
We are excited to kick off our 5th year of the Windy Meadow Farms CSA (WMF). We are growing for a smaller group this year and are trying new and different variety types of veggies & herbs. So far the weather has not been working for us. We have been growing in the green houses for many weeks but have only been able to plant; peas & 1st planting of beets & beans in the ground due to the cold weather. The ground must be a certain temperature to plant each type of seed and we must be well past the killing frost at night to plant our transplants from the green house.
First Harvest Update:
Due to the conditions outside for the last month we will not be having our 1st harvest until possible the 3rd week in June. We are hoping for the 2nd week but are thinking it will be more like the 3rd week. If we have super weather and growth is faster than we think, it could be the 2nd week of June. We will post weekly updates on our website as well as sending out member email updates. We will be making up the lost weeks in possibly giving double weekly shares. We maybe able to extend the harvest for a couple of extra weeks in October but have found that the early killing frost the last four years have not allowed us to do this, we will have to see what the growing season brings.
Questions & Answers:
"How are the tomatoes going to be this year?"
Ans: The tomatoes are growing nicely in the green houses like all of the transplants. They are protected now but I do not know what the growing season is going to bring, example; heavy rains, disease, etc. We will continue to grow with the organic method and will loose plants and whole crops due to this method of growing. The health benefits of growing organically out weighs the lose of a few crops each year.
Thank you for supporting our CSA! We look forward to seeing each of you out to the farm during the growing season and annual events (Summer Social Picnic, Open Picks & Fall Harvest Party). Those who are members of our CSA are welcome to call for a "walk around of the farm" or to give a hand on the farm, as our weeds are never ending! We love to show small groups our farm and welcome your children and boys & girls clubs out for a tour & talk about farming in New York and at Windy Meadow Farms.
Enjoy your Spring!
Brenda & Tom
