Helpful Hints

  • If you aren't going to be home when the delivery is coming consider leaving a cooler with ice pack outside for us to put the produce in.

  • Farm fresh eggs will peel if you steam them for 15 minutes instead of boil.

  • To keep your Lettuce fresh longer place a dry towel with the lettuce in your fridge.

  • To dry Parsley, put it in a brown paper bag and hang the parsley upside down to dry.

  • Keep all tomatoes out of the refrigerator.

  • Keeping Corn Fresh

While the general rule of thumb is to buy and eat corn the same day it has been harvested (as soon as the corn is harvested the sugars start converting to starches and the corn loses sweetness), most of us have been guilty of trying to break that rule for one reason or another. We tried a variety of methods for overnight storage using Silver Queen corn, one of the more perishable varieties.

We found that the worst thing you can do is to leave corn sitting out on the counter. Throwing it into the refrigerator without any wrapping is nearly as bad. Storing in an airtight bag helps, but we found the best way to keep corn as fresh as possible is to wrap it, husk and all, first in a wet paper bag and then in a plastic bag (any shopping bag will do). After 24 hours, corn stored in this fashion remained juicy and sweet, not starchy.
